A Kitchen Deep Clean That Found Grease Behind the Stove — and Fixed It

Last month we completed a kitchen-focused deep clean for a family in the south metro who had been in their home for about two years without a professional clean. What they asked for: oven interior, refrigerator interior, cabinet interiors, and a full surface reset of the kitchen.

What we found when we pulled the stove forward: grease buildup along the back wall and floor, collected cooking splatter that had migrated under and behind the unit over 24 months.

This is normal. Most households don't know it's happening.

What the Job Covered

The kitchen deep clean took a two-person team approximately 3.5 hours — total cost $385 at our $55/hr per cleaner rate.

Scope of work:

  • Oven interior: removed racks, soaked and scrubbed, food-safe degreaser on all surfaces, door glass inside and out
  • Refrigerator interior: emptied all shelves and drawers, washed with food-safe cleaner, treated door gaskets
  • Cabinet interiors: 14 upper and lower cabinets, shelves wiped, interior corners cleared of crumbs and cooking residue
  • Stovetop: grates soaked, burner caps scrubbed, surface degreased
  • Behind/under stove: pulled unit forward, cleaned wall and floor behind it
  • Counters, backsplash, sink: full surface reset including grout lines at tile backsplash
  • Exhaust hood: filters degreased, exterior wiped

Products used: EPA-approved degreaser for appliance surfaces; food-safe cleaner for refrigerator and cabinet interiors; microfiber cloths, not paper — no scratch risk on coated surfaces.

Why Grease Behind the Stove Matters

Grease accumulation behind and under a stove is not cosmetic. It is a fire hazard. The National Fire Protection Association cites cooking equipment as the leading cause of home structure fires in the United States. Accumulated grease on surfaces near the burner unit is a direct contributing factor.

Most homeowners never see it because pulling the stove forward requires effort, and there's no visual cue from the front. A professional deep clean catches it as a matter of routine.

How Often Should a Kitchen Be Deep Cleaned?

Our recommendation for Twin Cities families who cook regularly:

  • Every 6 months: oven interior, stovetop grates, refrigerator interior
  • Annually: cabinet interiors, behind/under the stove, exhaust hood filter
  • As needed: after holiday cooking, before putting a home on the market, after any significant cooking event

Clients on our bi-weekly regular service schedule get a kitchen surface reset every visit. The deep components (oven, fridge, cabinets) are added as requested or on a 6-month schedule.
